The modern day Pettavel Winery and Restaurant features a state of the art winery, cellar door sales, fine dining restaurant and flexible function facilities, positioned on a hill top with sweeping views. Situated at the start of the Great Ocean Road, Victoria's premier tourist attraction Pettavel welcomes visitors year round.

WINTER 2008

As the cool weather arrived in Geelong, the vineyards passed through their colourful phase before the leaves disbursed during a fierce wind storm. The now bare vineyards have been pre-pruned and the vineyard team are busy adjusting bud numbers and regulating spur spacing's as they walk each row in the brisk Geelong weather.

The patient wait for precipitation continues as recent rainfall has replenished soil moisture levels but still more rainfall is needed to fill our water storage's.

Work in the winery continues at a brisk pace as the wines all require ongoing attention as they move through the winemaking process. With the first 2008 wine, the Evening Star Sauvigon Blanc already in bottle and the recipient of a Gold Medal, our attention is now focused on the previous vintage wines currently maturing in barrels and hogsheads. Vintage 2008

The summer of 2007/2008 began with warm and dry conditions prevailing resulting in vineyard growth advancing at a pace well advanced on previous years. Water resources were once again strained, but replenishing falls in January restored soil moisture levels and provided a final burst of vigour in the vineyard producing healthy canopies with full leaf coverage. Ideal ripening conditions continued with the long warm days contrasted by cool nights, the result of our close proximity to the coast, and assisting in the retention of perfumed aromatics in all varieties along with crisp natural acid levels.

Our Geelong harvest began with the night picking of our Sauvignon Blanc which was delivered to the winery in the early hours of Saturday March the 8th and crushed soon after. The early harvest date allowed us to bring forward the release of the ever popular wine as the 2007 vintage has been sold out for some time.

The warm and dry ripening period in Geelong produced a condensed start to the harvest with the early ripening varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon and Pinot Noir all maturing within a short period of time. This condensed start to the harvest period dissipated any hope we had for a calm and evenly paced vintage as the pace quickly rose to hectic in the winery as we were inundated with numerous varieties, all requiring specialist attention.

There was a gap between these early ripening varieties and our Viognier, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes which began to arrive in the winery in late May. This gap was filled with densely flavoured Shiraz grapes from a contract client in Heathcote and a number of contract clients from the Geelong region. Tthe pace and urgency did not diminish at all in the winery until the last of our golden Riesling grapes were hand harvested in mid May, destined for the 2008 Evenin Star Late Harvest Riesling.

Pettavel estate grown Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The Pettavel olive grove, established in 2001 as a part of our water recycling program yielded it's first major crop in 2006. Olives are harvested each year from seven different olive varieties, all of which are cold pressed then settled in the Pettavel cellar before blending and bottling.
