SPRING/SUMMER - FLOWERING IN THE VINEYARD Late spring and early summer rain in Geelong has provided much needed moisture during the important period of vine growth and flowering. Flowering is nearing completion in early December with fruit set looking reasonable considering the tough dry conditions experienced at the end of the 2007 vintage.
Vintage 2007 With every new vintage fresh challenges are faced in our quest to produce wines of the highest quality from our vineyards, and vintage 2007 presented early challenges. The Geelong region has long suffered from inconsistent rainfall and the 2006 / 2007 season, like the rest of Victoria has seen record low rainfall levels.
Water saving measures were implemented in the design phase of Pettavel and the engineering features of steep sloping tank floors, floors and drains are evident to visitors. These design features reduce our water usage during production processes, while the large roof area catches what rainfall we do receive for future use in the winery.
Water recycling was also an important consideration during the design of Pettavel, with all waste water treated on site through a series of aeration and storage dams monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency of Victoria. The treated water is used for irrigation on our vineyard and olive grove where additional measures such as green mulching and the application of the composted grape skins and seeds assist in maximising the retention of valuable soil moisture.
Our water saving measures allowed us to maintain relatively healthy vineyards throughout the dry 2007 ripening season, and while our yields were well below average this year, the early harvest will assisted us in further reducing our water requirements in the vineyard. Pettavel estate grown Extra Virgin Olive Oil The Pettavel olive grove, established in 2001 as a part of our water recycling program yielded it's first major crop in 2006. Olives were harvested from three different olive varieties, all of which were cold pressed, settled in the Pettavel cellar before blending and bottling in December 2006.
